RJ12 is the type of connector used to connect a telephone wall jack to a phone. Each RJ12 connector contains six metal pins. There are two different pinouts (wiring schemes) for RJ12, straight and reverse. Straight pinouts are used to send data (like a fax machine). Reverse pinouts are used to send voice communications (like phone calls). RJ12 is the same size as RJ11, although RJ11 is older and only uses four pins instead of six. Coiled handset cords use RJ9, which is smaller than RJ11 and RJ12 but the same shape. Thicker cables, such as Cat3, are used to run lines inside walls, between buildings, and in other professional settings.
