Adapters are used when you need to change from one type of connector to another. For example, say you have a computer that uses HDMI and monitor that uses DisplayPort. If you already have an HDMI cable laying around, it is a lot easier to put an adapter on there than to buy a whole new cable. Adapters are only usable when you are sticking with the same type of connection (audio to audio, coax to coax, etc.) If you are switching between different formats, such as going from analog to digital, you will need a converter instead.
