Direct Burial Solid Cat5e is used for applications that require the cable to be run outdoors or directly in ground with or without the use of a conduit. Direct Burial Cat5e is made with a polyethylene (PE) jacket to protect the cable from water, and extreme temperatures. Internally the cable features solid conductors that provide maximum performance over long distances.  Four color-striped pairs make it easy to install and reduces alien crosstalk. Direct burial cable is a flooded cable meaning the cable is filled with a gel to prevent water seeping in to the cable. This cable is sold by the foot, order just what you need. Solid Cat5e is commonly terminated to an RJ45 connector, jack, or patch panel.

This product was purchased to install an external Wireless access point (WAP). Typical WAPs require Power over Ethernet (POE), so when I began researching cat 5 cables for this install, I was impressed with the finding of this product and the cost. POE requires solid copper conductors for consistent reliable operations. The cheaper types were copper clad which most likely would have yielded undesirable results. On top of the value for cost per footage, I was equally impressed with the shipping time. The DB properties was a personal choice as a time savings of using conduit.

Q: What is the maximum length for a Cat5e cable?

A: The maximum length for a Cat5e cable run is 100 meters (328 feet). If longer runs are required, the use of active hardware such as a repeater or switch is necessary.

Q: What is the difference between solid and stranded cable?

A: Solid Cat5e is a 4-pair cable. Within each of the 8 individual wires there is a solid piece of wire covered by a PVC jacket. Because of the solid core of these cables they will be more rigid than stranded cable, but can carry a stronger signal than stranded wire. Solid cable also has the ability to be punched down in to jacks, patch panels, and 66 blocks.

Stranded Cat5e is a 4-pair cable as well. Within each of the 8 individual wires there are multiple tiny stands of smaller gauge wire that are held together by a PVC jacket. Because this cable is made with smaller strands of cable it is more flexible than solid core wire. Stranded Cat5e is typically use for short patch cables. Stranded wire cannot be punched down.

Q: What is shielded Cat5e cable?

A: Shielded Cat5e cable is used for increased protection from interference and crosstalk. It is typically used in electrical noisy environments. Common sources of interference are radio towers, high-powered electrical conduit, fluorescent lighting, or any other device emitting electro-magnetic or radio frequency signals.

Q: What’s the difference between the UL and ETL listed Marks?

A: Both marks demonstrate that the product that bears it has met the minimum requirements of widely accepted product safety standards as determined through the independent testing of a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). The only real difference between the Marks is in the service, and services, of the testing laboratory behind them.

Both the ETL and UL Listed Marks are recognized by local inspectors and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) throughout North America and also in some areas of South America.

Q: What is a flooded cable?

A: Flooded Cat5e cable uses a water blocking gel to protect the cable from water infiltration, even if the cable has a minor cut in the outer jacket. Flooded cable is typically used for direct burial outdoor applications.

Q: Will our Cat5e cable support Power over Ethernet (POE)?

A: Yes, all of our Cat5e will support Power over Ethernet.

Q: What does plenum rated mean?

A: Plenum (CMP) is a rating that is given to cables that have passed a stringent burn test and are able to be run through plenum air spaces. Plenum air spaces include drop ceilings and non-ducted HVAC air returns.
