"The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video interface standard designed to maximize the visual quality of digital display devices such as flat panel LCD computer displays and digital projectors." - Wikipedia DVI works using a digital protocol that allows the desired brightness of the pixels being transmitted to be sent as binary data. The display is driven at its original resolution, and each number is read and the desired brightness is applied to the appropriate pixel. Unlike an analog signal, in which the appearance of each pixel may be influenced by adjacent pixels, electrical noise, and other analog distortions, digital video interface allows each individual pixel in the output buffer to correspond to one individual pixel in the input device.
The analog VGA represents an older standard in which the analog source would transmit each horizontal line of an images while varying its output voltage to display the appropriate brightness. In various CRT devices, the intensity of the scanning beam would vary as it moved across the screen. Today's devices require a more sophisticated technology. Many screens and displays today are digital, and when used with analog signals, a single brightness must be chosen for each of the individual pixels. A decoder will check the voltage of the input signal at various intervals to ensure the proper brightness is being applied to each pixel. If you have one digital device transmitting to another digital device, the images may become distorted if the readings are not taken from the center of the pixel.
There are different types of DVI connectors you can choose from, depending on the type of monitor you will use. "The DVI connector usually contains pins to pass the DVI-native digital video signals. In the case of dual-link systems, additional pins are provided for the second set of data signals." - Wikipedia In order to make DVI universal, some DVI connectors may incorporate pins that can pass through analog signals and make use of the VGA standard. This type of connector allows both digital and analog monitors to operate off of the same DVI connector. DVI-D connectors work only with digital monitors, whereas DVI-A works solely with analog, and DVI-I can work with both analog and digital systems. DVI-DL is a dual link connector that works specifically for high resolution monitors.
